Spraying & Site Clearance Ground Cultivation Seed Drilling Fertiliser Spreading Sportsfields
Grassing is the mechanical side of establishing vegetation — cultivating a seedbed, drilling or broadcasting seed, and fertilising to match the soil. It is what we use where ground can be worked, and it sits alongside hydroseeding, which is what we use where ground cannot.

Very few contractors in New Zealand offer both. Most own one type of gear and specify accordingly. We run hydroseeding trucks and a full cultivation and drilling fleet, which means the recommendation follows the site rather than the equipment. Flat, accessible, workable ground is usually better and cheaper drilled. Steep faces, thin or absent topsoil, and ground a tractor cannot safely reach are hydroseeded. Plenty of projects need both, in different places, and we can programme them together.

Spraying and Site Clearance

We clear sites of existing vegetation, target specific weed species, and mechanically remove growth where spraying alone will not do it — working with sprayers, mowers and mulchers across areas large and small.

All our spray operators hold GrowSafe certification. On sites near watercourses, in sensitive receiving environments, or under consent conditions restricting chemical use, that qualification and the record-keeping behind it is not optional.

Ground Cultivation

The seedbed decides the result. More grassing failures trace back to cultivation than to seed or fertiliser, and a poorly prepared bed cannot be recovered by sowing more heavily.

We hold a full cultivation fleet and use it selectively:

  • Deep rippers to break compaction left by earthworks plant, so roots and water can get down
  • Discs and ploughs for primary cultivation on heavier or previously unworked ground
  • Rotary hoe, maxitill and power harrows for secondary cultivation and producing a fine, even tilth
  • Stone buriers where surface stone would otherwise spoil a turf finish or damage mowing gear
  • Level bars, power rakes and harrows for final grading and surface finish

Which of those a site needs depends on the soil, the compaction history and the finish being aimed at. We match the pass sequence to the ground rather than running the same programme everywhere.

Seed Drilling

Drilling puts seed into the soil at a controlled depth and spacing rather than onto it, which on suitable ground gives better germination from less seed, and a more even sward.

We run specialist landscape drills with rollers attached for precise sowing on sports fields, turf areas and high-profile sites, through to broadcast seeders behind a tractor or quad bike for large-scale reinstatement where that level of precision is not required. Seed is rolled into the surface or lightly covered with harrows depending on the method and the soil.

Scale is not a constraint in either direction. We drill small subdivision berms and streetscapes, and we drill large agricultural paddocks.

Fertiliser Spreading

Soil gives vegetation what it has, not what it needs. Getting the difference right is most of the reason one sward establishes and another struggles on an apparently similar site.

We take soil tests before application where the ground warrants it, and specify fertiliser against what the results actually show rather than applying a standard blend everywhere. Application is by equipment matched to the site and the terrain.

Sportsfields

We construct new sports fields and renovate existing ones, from design through to a playing surface: specified topsoil media supplied and installed, drainage installed, levelling to grade, turf established, and maintenance afterwards.

Our preferred specification is cross drill seeding with a hydromulch application over the top. Drilling puts the seed at depth in two directions for an even, dense sward; the hydromulch protects it, holds moisture and speeds establishment. It is the best of both methods, and it is only available from a contractor who runs both.

Seed selection and timing then do the rest, and both change with the season. We will tell you what is achievable in the window you have, and what waiting a few weeks would buy you.
