Evergreen Landcare has 40 years experience in Hydroseeding throughout New Zealand.
We are the original pioneers of the hydraulic application of grass mulches in New Zealand.
Our specialised Hydroseeding process provides a cost effective service for grass seeding and fertilising new & existing areas.
We Hydroseed with quality seed blends & high analysis slow-release NPK fertilisers, using a mulch made from recycled newspaper.
Alternative mulches such as a paper-wood mulch or a high quality wood-fibre mulch can also be chosen.
Evergreen Landcare operates a fleet of 8 Hydroseeding units nationwide including a newly built tractor towed Hydroseeder for access to difficult sites.
Evergreen Landcare’s straw mulching process is very effective in preventing sediment run-off in heavy rains. Sediment run-off is impeded by at least 80%.
The process involves mulching straw and blowing it over the ground surface until it forms a continuous open textured mat.
The covering of straw provides a microclimate of even temperature and moisture content at the ground surface.
The open weave of the straw allows light and water into the seed bed providing ideal conditions for germination. The straw mulch prevents drying out due to the effects of frost or sun and wind.
Using this method new grasses can be established even in June/July at altitudes of over 500 metres above sea level.
Straw mulching can be used in conjunction with either Hydroseeding or conventionally sown areas.
Evergreen Landcare can provide cost effective cultivation, preparation, sowing, and fertilising services to it’s customers. This helps provide the complete package when it comes to the reinstatement of large land development projects throughout New Zealand.
Cultivation and Preparation of the seed bed can be carried out using a range of specialist equipment such as a rotary hoe, discs, deep rippers, a maxitill, harrows, levelling equipment and a power harrow. All have their specific purpose and can be tailored to suit each individual site.
Sowing can be carried out in a number of forms designed to suit each site. We have specialised landscape drills with rollers attached to carry out precise sowing on sports fields, turf areas, and high profile sites if required. In addition we also have broadcast seeders behind a tractor or quad bike that can be used for a more cost effective reinstatement solution. The seed is normally rolled into the surface or lightly covered using harrows.
Fertilising is critical to achieving a healthy vegetation cover and Evergreen Landcare can offer a wide range of specialist fertilisers to suit each site. We have the ability to obtain soil tests prior to the application to determine what is required and then the most cost effective fertiliser can be recommended. Once this is determined we have the ability to apply it using our specialist equipment.
Evergreen Landcare can supply and plant a wide range of exotic and native plant species that are suitable for a variety of locations.
We design complete landscape solutions according to your criteria and objectives.
Evergreen Landcare is able to plant native trees and shrubs in root trainers, or larger containers, as part of an engineered solution to erosion control issues.
Taller species suitable for riparian reserves, wetlands or forest rehabilitations are available.
Lower growing scrubs, flaxes and grasses for height critical or low maintenance areas can also be easily sourced.
Evergreen Landcare has a speciality team that are very experienced in all aspects of wider landscape work - contouring, retaining walls, water features and paths, as well as planting.
We can also supply and install irrigation systems of lawns and gardens if required.
HYDROSOIL® is a new product for use on difficult low-fertility sites developed by Evergreen Landcare.
HYDROSOIL® bonds readily with whatever substrate it is applied to.
HYDROSOIL®'s dark colour attracts sunlight, making the seedbed warmer and encouraging faster seed germination.
Its special tackifier helps retain moisture in the soil surface. This reduces the possibility of a hard soil crust developing.
The organic humus material in HYDROSOIL® assists in the future development of soil microbes.
When HYDROSOIL® is combined with straw mulching, higher than average soil surface moisture levels are maintained.
None of the ingredients of HYDROSOIL® are classified as Hazardous Substances.
BIOBLANKET® is a bonded fibre matrix specially designed for New Zealand conditions, using materials made in New Zealand.
BIOBLANKET® is used on difficult steep sites that need greater early surface protection from wind and water erosion, than that offered by conventional hydroseeding.
BIOBLANKET® provides a natural skin over the treated surface and adheres to the soil.
It follows the contours of the slope and avoids the problems of under-rilling.
The surface of BIOBLANKET® is textured and porous. This reduces precipitation run-off velocity. It also captures water to maintain an even soil moisture content.
BIOBLANKET® contains a blend of elongated wood fibres bound together with non-toxic adhesives. It slowly degrades as vegetation is established.

|Task:||Ryman Retirement Village|
Evergreen Landcare was the sole contractor on site in charge of beautifying the grounds of this development. Our involvement spans from installing and programming the irrigation, following and installing detailed planting plans, mulching garden beds, topsoil spreading to lawns and finally hydro seeding the lawn to get the effect you see today.
We have accomplished these landscapes under extreme time line pressures yet produced a high quality finish that we and all the residents are proud of.
We look forward to continuing our relationship with Ryman to see the entire project through.
Evergreen Landcare partnered with Emily McEwan, of Outright Landscape Design, Mosgiel for the Ellerslie Flower Show.
Emily designed, and Evergreen Landcare lead by Gavin did the Landscaping and construction for our “Outside the Box” display. The construction took over two weeks and many, many hours prior planning.
Winning Gold in the large display was a great achievement and something we are all extremely proud of given the Landscaping detail involved.
Evergreen Landcare has been contracted by Heb Structures and Heb Landscaping to carry out the landscaping works as a result of the SH 1 Atiamuri Bridge Replacement project.
There is a large sidling fill batter on the northern side of the bridge and Evergreen Landcare has installed a large quantity of geo-web supplied by Maccaferri. The geo-web was then filled with compost and then hydroseeded using a low growing mix with native seeds added.
The batter was then to be planted once the slope had been stabilised and had a good vegetation cover.
Hydrosoil® was applied on the low fertility pumice batters near the bridge itself whereas standard hydroseed was applied along the large batters that had some soil on.
Straw Mulchng was used for sediment control and out of season germination especially to keep the frost off the young germinating grasses.
This large sand cut on the Queenstown Cycle Trail was severely eroding and with the Shotover River below Evergreen Landcare came up with a solution.
With sandy material even the light winds would erode this embankment. A few options were looked at but the sheer cost was prohibitive. Evergreen Landcare came up with a solution to firstly stabilise the slope with a biodegradable mesh then apply our Hydrosoil® product with a specially selected seed mix. Over the top of this we straw mulched and tacked the straw in place.
The straw provided not only extra surface protection but provided much needed moisture retention.
Upon inspection of this lifestyle block horse paddock we could see the pasture was completely "run out". So we looked at the options.
Some paddocks just require correct fertiliser application and spraying out of unwanted weeds however in this situation plants were sparse.
We came in with our "one pass stone burier" machine to cultivate and create a good seed bed. We then sowed a low endophyte grass species which is better for grazing horses and applied fertiliser.
The Canterbury Regional Council have raised and altered large areas of stopbanks near the Waimakariri River to better safeguard surrounding areas.
MBD Contracting engaged Evergreen Landcare to stabilise and vegetate the entire length of the new works. The application of hydroseed, then straw mulch followed by "tacking" the straw in place was chosen as best practice.
Given the time of year (July) the straw mulch will provide not only surface protection but also aid in out of season germination. The straw acts as a thermal blanket aiding the germination process. The straw is held in place by "tacking" to prevent wind blow.
This same process is really beneficial in dry situations as the straw provides moisture retention.
Evergreen Landcare were sub-contracted by Fulton Hogan on the East Taupo Arterial Project from the initial stages of earthworks.
During this time we provided straw mulching, hydroseeding and grassing services as well as final formation, grooming, turf establishment and mowing on roadside swale drains.
The low fertility and easily erodible pumice soils on which the East Taupo Arterial is built, coupled with the proximity of Lake Taupo’s clear waters created unique challenges. While Evergreen’s standard hydroseeding product was used in some areas, the large cuts and fill batters of raw pumice called for use of our more technical hydroseed mulches.
Hydrosoil® was used to establish grasses on areas such as the vertical abutments of the TH2 Gully culvert. It acts as an artificial top-soil, containing grass seed and higher levels of course organic material along with mycorrhizal fungi to promote grass growth and kick-start the natural soil-building processes. On site we applied Hydrosoil® from a hanging frame held up by an excavator onto a vertical terramesh wall.
Bioblanket® is a bonded fibre matrix that provides protection to vulnerable soil surfaces from the effects of water, wind and frost until grasses can become established. Bioblanket® was used to establish a dense grass sward in the 30 kilometres of swale drain.
Siltstop® is a filtration tube product that can be used for temporary or long term control of water runoff and sediment. Due to its portability Siltstop® was used extensively on the Eastern Taupo Arterial to protect germinating seed beds in the roadside swale drains from autumn rain storms.
Due to the large areas of soil that were exposed at one time, the application of straw mulch was critical in order to minimize water-borne sediment movement and comply with environmental consents. Evergreen used tractor-mounted straw blowers to apply a layer of hay over high risk areas.
A cut batter at the base of a steep hillside on State Highway 1 west of Tirau had been collapsing into the road for a number of years. The substrate was ancient alluvial silts associated with the Waikato River.
This material was very soft and prone to wind erosion and slumping. The steep slope above the cut batter meant that benching was not an option.
The design called for hydroseeding followed by the application of 450 gram per square metre (gsm) coir (coconut fibre) matting. This was held in place using 20mm galvanized wire ground staples. The coir matting protected the soil surface from wind and rain impact until grass vegetation had become established.
The slope was then covered with high density polyethylene (HDPE) bi-axial (30 kilo-newton) geogrid anchored to the slope with 650mm long steel pins at one metre centres. The bi-axial geogrid provided the structural strength, ensuring that the surface layer of vegetation root mass will not shear off in the future.
We also not only fenced along the top with a conventional farm fence but added a single wire electric fence above the cut so cattle wouldn't damage and start erosion.
Challenging at times with SH1 traffic and the steepness of the slope but with correct procedures and the use of absailing along with a cherry picker the job was a success.
Evergreen Landcare has been involved in the construction of the Matahorua Gorge Realignment as a subcontractor for Downer which is situated 50 km north of Napier.
The project has consisted of a 3.1 km realignment of State Highway 2 through Matahorua Gorge which has included the construction of two new bridges.
Evergreen Landcare work has involved various forms of re-vegetation and erosion control techniques to assist in ensuring environmental compliance during and after the project is completed.
Hydroseeding was carried out once earthworks had been completed on the steeper areas such as the cut and fill batters, the roadside verges/shoulders, and steeper areas in the farm paddocks. Hydrosoil® was also used on the project on areas that lacked natural fertility and areas that were deemed difficult to establish vegetation.
Conventional grassing also took place on the areas that could be accessed by a tractor or motorbike. The larger areas where topsoil had been put in place would usually get conventionally grassed which involved preparation of the surface using harrows or grubbers, this is then followed by seeding and fertilising which is either harrowed or rolled into the surface.
Straw mulching was carried out throughout the project to reduce the effects of erosion and sediment run-off and to ensure environmental compliance for the project especially in the winter months when it rained. The hay was effective at reducing the erosion of exposed earthworks.
This lawn area had been dirt and moss for over a year. We had to approach it differently to spread new topsoil.
An attempt to put a good lawn in this very smart property had failed and Evergreen Landcare were invited have a look to see if we could establish a lawn which would enhance the view and property.
The area had been sprayed and sprayed to keep all the weeds and poor grasses out till such time as the owner was ready to have a second attempt. On inspection there wasn't one blade of grass but a mass of moss. Good old nature would have stepped in to start and cover the soil however it was obvious the PH would be really low.
We recommended coming in with our specialist landscape harley rake to scarify the top layer and rake off all the dead moss. Once this was removed we could then prepare a good seed bed.
We hydroseeded the area with extra imported wood fibre, high analysis fertiliser and added lime flour in the mix to bring the ph levels up.
Evergreen Landcare have been involved in the Wairamarama-Onewhero Seal Extension as a sub-contractor for Heb Construction.
The project has involved extensive hydroseeding of cut and fill batters where our specialist batter mix has been successful in stabilising the difficult clay material. The tip sites and borrow areas were conventionally grassed and then straw mulched to provide additional surface protection, erosion and sediment control.
In addition to this, Evergreen Landcare also developed two Siltstop® MSE Living Earth Retaining Walls which have been used successfully to stabilise two areas that would have been prone to potential washouts.
Evergreen Landcare has been contracted by Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner Ltd to do the landscaping component of the Masterton Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade for the Masterton District Council.
The contract involves a landscaping component which Evergreen will complete and an irrigation component which we have employed “Think Water, Hawkes Bay’’ as a subcontractor we carry out these works.
The contract consists of the following:
Bulldozed ridgelines were exposed on this steep hill country and we had to stabilise the ground to prevent further erosion.
A helicopter was the only real method of applying the hydroseed mix on this sort of terrain. We needed to think about maximum coverage and designing a mix that would stick to the hillsides.
The expertise of Rotowork and their pilot Craig worked in conjunction with Evergreen Landcare to get a successful outcome. Two large hydroseed units along with a water truck were used so there was little down time for the helicopter.
A specialist mix design was made up to get the coverage as well as getting enough fertiliser and seed onto the area. It was a successful outcome and some of the product even grew on the concrete posts!!!
Evergreen Landcare has been involved in this large roading project in conjunction with Stringfellows Civil Engineering Contractors which is located on SH 1 at Ohingaiti approx 25km south of Taihape.
The work includes realigning 4.5km of road near the township of Ohingaiti. Our work consisted of large amounts of hydroseeding and straw mulching.
The hydroseeding consisted of large areas of cut and fill batters once completed using our specialist Evergreen batter mix. The road side verges/shoulders were also hydroseeded using our specialist road shoulder mix. There has been a successful strike throughout the project and we feel that we have achieved the desired result for our client.
The straw mulching consisted of covering subsequent areas in hay to reduce the effects of sediment run-off in order to acheive environmental compliance throughout the project. Areas that were covered in hay were usually grassed or hydroseeded beforehand and then the hay was usually tacked in place using a specialist tackifier to hold the hay as the wind funneled down through the huge cut batters.
Evergreen Landcare has been contracted by Hick Bros Civil Construction to carry out stabilisation work, erosion and sediment control, and re-instatement work for the development of the Long Bay subdivision on the North Shore.
Large amounts of straw mulching, seeding and fertilising were carried out over large open exposed surfaces to stabilise and re-vegetate after extensive earthworks had taken place.
Hydro soil was applied successfully to a big clay batter in order to establish good vegetation cover on difficult soil conditions.
Also in addition to this, large quantities of straw wattles were supplied and installed to provide additional erosion and sediment control.
Evergreen Landcare, in conjunction with partners built this Mechanically Stabilised Earth (MSE) retaining wall near Tairua using Erosion Control Siltstop Tubes.
The use of MSE or compacted earth retaining walls has been used successfully throughout New Zealand in the past.
Traditionally hessian sacks filled with soil have been used to create a green, growing face.
The use of Siltstop erosion control tubes significantly speeds up this part of the process, reducing machine down time and lowering overall costs.
Hunter Civil engaged Evergreen Landcare to stabilise all the drain embankments and other sloping areas with hydroseed.
Tractor equipment was used to grass the flatter areas but we had to adapt to wetter than anticipated ground conditions in some areas. Changing equipment from our larger tractor and cultivation/seeding equipment, we brought in our lighter machinery to be able to do the job with the finish required. Direct drilling equipment was used in other areas where we didn't want to disturb the soil too much.
Evergreen Landcare has recently completed the first stage of the landscape and urban design work for SH 88 Realignment which is close to the new international stadium for the Rugby World Cup.
The work has involved preparing the ground for planting and lawn areas, mulching of garden areas, planting, hydroseeding and various other landcsape works.
Evergreen Landcare also maintained the planting and landscape works for 12 months after site completion as part of our contract works.
Evergreen Landcare were engaged by the Te Rapa Alliance to provide our services during the course of the project which won an environmental award.
The project has won awards for environmental excellence, something Evergreen Landcare are proud of. At times delivering and completing work before environmental inspections has been challenging. Working as a team with our client has brought us all project satisfaction.
Hydroseeding, Hydrosoil, Straw mulching, Grassing, Rotary Hoeing, Spraying, and mowing right through to the completion of the project.
Evergreen Landcare has been involved in the development of the Ngatamariki Geothermal Power Station near Taupo.
Over the last few year we have carried out large amounts of hydro seeding, straw mulching, soil saver, grassing and vegetation control during the construction phase of the project.
We have worked for a number of contractors to help them acheive their enviromental compliance throughout the construction as well as working direct to Might River Power at times.
This has now lead into maintenance vegetation control activities which we are currently carrying out when required to keep the grounds looking tidy.

Sports field was seeded and playable within 3 months.
Evergreen Landcare were engaged by the Auckland Regional Council to help revamp one of their exisitng playground areas as part of the councils updating programme for Parks and reserves.
Evergreen completed all of the foundation works and preparations for 'Hawke Contracts' to come and install the new playground frames and structures.
We were then left with the task to shape and form natural edges using large boulders, logs and grass mounding to the playground area and complete all final finishing touches.
A great result for us thoroughly enjoyed this work creating something new for the local community to enjoy. Hopefully more playground upgrades to come.
|Task:||Hunua Green Play Ground|
|Address:||Auckland Council Park|
The team at Evergreen Landcare started from a clean slate to create the contours, planting and cushion fall areas to formalise the playground.
We created interactive retain walls made with tree logs for stepping along and earth bunds that navigate the user through the space.
The planting was designed and implemented by us to work with the park and the greater environment. Several boulders where placed throughout the site to tie the design into the local landscape.
The local community feed back on this play ground has been extremely positive, we have now completed several projects of this nature for Auckland Council which the team have enjoyed creating.
We sought the services of a personable, reliable and professional hydroseeding company to assist with the grassing of the Jack Nicklaus golf course at Kinloch. Evergreen Landcare provided these qualities, achieving a great result on the golf course.
Evergreen Landcares involvement in the project was critical to securing the volatile pumice soils and their ability to be there when we needed them, often at short notice was one of the reasons we were successful with our grassing programme.
